Rosalia alpina

Rosalia alpina (Linnaeus, 1758)

Rosalia alpina is a beetle bolonging to the family Cerambycidae, distributed in most part of central and south Europ and Asia Minor; in Italy is unique in mountain zone from Alps to Sicily. This species is essentially linked to the mature beech forests, the grub eats dead wood of beech, only occasionally it develops at the expense of elm (Ulmus sp.), linden (Tilia sp.) and maples (Acer sp.). At the end of larval life, which lasts at least three years, the adults flicker and fly between June and september (Duelli & Wermelinger, 2005; Sama in Ruffo & Stoch, 2007; Cizek et al., 2009; Drag et al., 2011; Russo et al., 2011). R. Alpine is threatened or near extinction in some European countries, for this reason it is included in Annexes II and IV of Directive 92/43/CEE and considered “Vulnerable” by IUCN (IUCN, 2011); in Tuscany it is a protected species under regional Law 56/2000.
