Bombina pachypus is an endemic species of Italy, from central Liguria to Aspromonte, the Ululone appeninico breeds in small collections of water such as temporary pools, side pools of rivers, tanks and troughs, preferably well-exposed, both in the woods in open environments, from a few meters above sea level to 1600 meters (Mayor et al., 2006, Lanza et al., 2007).

The kind of enviroments of reproduction are reduced due to the increase of the coverage of forest stands and for the significant reduction of wet environments within the forest areas.

This species is mentioned in Annex II and IV of Directive 97/62 CE and and listed in Annex A of LR Toscana 56/2000 and considered by the IUCN "Endangered" (IUCN, 2011).
